How this is worked out
- Figures are for the whole 2026 to 2027 tax year. Your payslip spreads them over pay periods, so monthly amounts can differ by a few pence.
- Personal Allowance is £12,570. Above £100,000 it goes down by £1 for every £2 of income, to nothing at £125,140.
- England, Wales and Northern Ireland: 20% to £50,270, 40% to £125,140, 45% above. Scotland: 19%, 20%, 21%, 42%, 45% and 48% bands.
- Employee National Insurance (category A): 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above.
- Student loans: 9% above £26,900 (Plan 1), £29,385 (Plan 2), £33,795 (Plan 4) or £25,000 (Plan 5); postgraduate 6% above £21,000.
- Not included: benefits in kind, Marriage Allowance, Blind Person's Allowance, and other income such as savings or rent.
